Salisbury Sketchers visit to the Salisbury Museum
Sunday 16 March 2025

Salisbury Sketchers paid a return visit to Salisbury Museum.  This time we were restricted to the ground floor galleries due to a gathering of dignitaries upstairs.  It was quite a sight to see them dressed in full processional regalia and actually it would have been a great drawing exercise! Most of us settled down to draw in the Wessex gallery that houses many local archeological finds, though one member decided to depict the wonderful old Scout car overlooked by the Salisbury Giant.
We ended the afternoon with a sociable chat over tea in the  cafe. Another enjoyable occasion at the Museum.

Later in the year the museum will be holding an open exhibition of landscapes to which all artists are invited to submit their work.  Details can be found on their website. I hope SGA members will consider entering their artwork.

Next month on the afternoon of Sunday, April 13th, the Sketchers will be meeting at St Anne's Gate in St John's Street.

St Thomas's Church, Salisbury
Sunday 16 February 2025

This was our first sketching opportunity of 2025, and it was good to see fourteen members turn out on a chilly, grey afternoon to sketch together.
The church was warm and welcoming and members appreciated the quiet and peaceful interior, that provided some great architectural features to draw and paint. It was a good start to the year.

Visit to Salisbury Museum
Sunday 17 November 2024

Our last Sketchers event for the year was very successful with fifteen members taking part.  There was a wealth of subjects to draw from within the museum collections and at the end of the afternoon, over a cup of tea, it was good to look at each other's drawings depicting a variety of subjects from Flintstones to a fireplace!

The Trinity Buoy Wharf drawing exhibition elicited a few comments about some of the more controversial works on display.  The first prize had gone to a wall display of wire objects that didn't appear to conform to the dictionary definition of drawing:  'a picture or diagram made with a pencil, pen, or crayon rather than paint'.  But it's always good to engage in conversations about what is considered to be worthy art.

I would like to thank everybody for coming along and supporting our sketching group.  It's very rewarding at the end of a session to see the artworks produced, from simple line drawings to colourful paintings.

Salisbury Sketchers Visit to the Maltings
Sunday October 20 2024

A report by Loraine Sherlock

After a truly miserable and wet morning I thought that perhaps I would be sketching on my own at this location.

So many thanks to the six members who turned up to join me and made the afternoon an enjoyable event.

The city was bustling with families going to the annual Charter Fair but we found quieter spots in sheltered doorways or sitting on benches on the green space by the river.  One member chose the warmer interior of the Turkish coffee shop where, over a cup of coffee, she drew some of the beautiful coloured lights hanging there
